TLC has noticed an increase in students who use screenreaders. In an effort to make our support for these students more sustainable, we have been experimenting with adding audio files of the questions and answer options to the question.

An audio file would be a more reliable way for students to experience the exam, especially the order of content and the pronunciation of scientific terms. It would also reduce the need for the instructor or TA to be present, either in-person or via Zoom, with the student during the exam.

If you implement this in your course, please send us your feedback and feedback from your students so we can continue to refine this method.

Audio files process

Preparation

You will create a duplicate exam that you can add these audio files to. TLC has instructions on creating a duplicate exam that you can follow.

Writing alt text and long descriptions

This should be done for any images that are present in the exam. TLC has written a guide for creating alt text and long descriptions.

Creating a script

To ensure you are verbally marking all of the parts of the question, you may want to create a script for each question with these elements.

  • Instructions:
  • Background information (if applicable):
  • Image (if applicable): say alt text
  • Image description (if applicable): say long description
  • Question:
    • “Answer options”
    • A/Option 1:
    • B/Option 2:
    • C/Option 3:
    • D/Option 4:
  • “End of Answer Options”

Make recordings

Once you have your script for the exam, you can use any sound recording software you have available to you. Most computers and phones come with a recording program installed. Record the questions as separate files so they can be individually embedded in each question.

Upload recordings to Canvas

In the Files section of Canvas, create a folder for each exam. Upload the audio files to this folder. For questions on file organization in Canvas, see TLC’s File Management Best Practices resource.

Embedding recordings in exam questions

  1. Open the question editor in the exam. In the toolbar, select the icon for embedding media, and select the option to embed Course Media

  2. You can select the audio file you want to embed from the side panel that appears. Save your changes by clicking the “Update Question” button. Don’t forget to save the changes made to the entire exam by clicking the “Save” button at the bottom of the page.
